Most esteemed
Alexander Mikhailovich!
I do not know whether I shall find forgiveness in the eyes of Yulia Alexandrovna and in yours for my long silence. Do not take it badly, for God's sake! One of my best memories of Khabarovsk is my acquaintance with you. Wandering through the wilds of the taiga in the central part of the Sikhote-Alin, I remembered you a great many times. It became dreary after your departure. God willing, we shall see each other soon! I am trying to arrange a transfer to Petersburg. I intend to devote two years to describing the Ussuri country and to working up the materials I have collected. Along with

an album [?]. In two years my "Through the Ussuri Krai" will come out in two volumes. The first volume will contain a description of the journey, our adventures, geographical and statistical descriptions, and then everything concerning the religion and way of life of our native peoples, chiefly the Orochi. This volume will be scientific-literary. The second volume will be purely scientific. It will include zoology, botany, meteorology, astronomy and geology.

I am dividing all my material into three parts. One part I can work up myself personally; the second I can work up with the help of scholarly specialists; and the third part I can only hand over to scholars, to supplement the similar material they already have at their disposal.
My first journey lasted 180 days,
