Fryderyk Chopin to Józef Elsner

Polish · Latin cursive · 26 Jan 1831 · Vienna

As written

Wieden dn. 26 Stycz[?]. 1831.

Do mnie należało

o wypadkach 29. Listop: aż do tey chwili, niedoczekałem się niczego, prócz

niewymowney[?] obawy i tęsknoty; — i Malfati naprożno się stara mnie prze-

konać że każdy artysta iest kosmopolitą. Choćby i tak było, to [skreślone: kiedy[?]]

iako artysta iestem ieszcze w kolébce, a iako polak trzeci krzyżyk zacząłem;

uczucia biorą przewagę, i żem dotychczas o układzie koncertu niemyślał.

Translation · English

Vienna, 26 January 1831.

Kind Mr Elsner,

I am ashamed that your kindness, of which I received so many more proofs at my departure, has once again anticipated my duty. It was up to me to write to you immediately after my arrival in Vienna, — and if I delayed, it was partly because I was convinced that my Parents would not fail to pass on to you the uninteresting news about me, and partly because I was waiting to be able to report something definite concerning myself. Since the day, however, on which I learned of the events of 29 November, up to this moment, I have experienced nothing but inexpressible fear and longing; — and Malfati tries in vain to convince me that every artist is a cosmopolitan. Even if that were so, then [crossed out: when] as an artist I am still in the cradle, while as a Pole I have begun my third decade; I hope, therefore, that knowing me, you will not hold it against me that older feelings prevail, and that until now I have not thought about arranging a concert. For in every respect far greater difficulties stand in my way today; — not only does the unbroken string of wretched piano concerts, by spoiling this kind of music, put off the public here, but moreover everything that has happened in Warsaw has changed my position, perhaps as much to my disadvantage here as it might contribute to my good in Paris —
